Platform side is large enough for trainers or street shoes. I especially like the little cleats on the side of the platform that grip well if you're not using cleated MTB shoes. The spike side is perfect. Even if you miss a spike (e.g. to start pedaling up a steep hill), the platform side can easily handle the spike and provide the right grip for a few wheel spins. Conversely, if you miss the side of the platform (e.g. to get away quickly at a busy intersection), you can easily use the side of the spike until you have time to adjust.
