Mazda B-Series and Ford Ranger/Explorer Premium Audio Notes

I have a 1995 B2300 which was actually Ford built and is the Ranger twin. The Ranger and Series B share the same instrument panel as the Explorer. Ford offered three sound systems: Basic sound with two long flat 8-pin connectors. Premium audio with an 8-pin and a 16-pin (green in the photo). ) Audiophile sound in the Explorer with a long 8-pin and a square 8-pin (black) T. The easiest way to find out which one you have is to look at the factory radio. If the radio has an AUTO SET button on all three models, then the sound is top-notch. If you have an Explorer and don't have an AUTO SET, look for the tiny JBL logo on the cassette door. JBL means you have an audiophile package. In the basic sound configuration, the speakers were connected directly to the radio and the setup is similar to any other standard setup. In premium and audiophile fairings, the wiring goes to the amplifier, which is usually somewhere under the rear fairing. There are two ways to work with a standard amp. Integrate a series amplifier. This is the kit for the job. Depending on the head unit you buy and the quality of your speakers, this may not be the best choice. Higher quality speakers may degrade the sound. Do not use the original amplifier. This includes running the speaker cables to the factory amplifier and connecting the speakers directly to the stereo system. This scosche tag will NOT fit. You need Metra 70-5605. Hope that helps.
