I bought this to replace my worn out Smith Sharpener. First let me be clear that this product is not a simple sharpener. It is purchased for mending instruments while using those instruments. Using this item on a personal or outdoor knife may ruin the blade as the bevel angle is different on this sharpener. This sharpening product uses pre-curved carbide. Carbide sharpening is very aggressive and removes a lot of metal. If you're sharpening a non-kitchen knife, it's best to use stones. This product works and is suitable for kitchen knives. That being said, this product is well made from heavy-duty plastic that is very easy to fill by hand. It's better made and heavier than the Smith it replaces. Carbide inserts are larger and appear to be of better quality. Always remember that this object should be moved in one direction without rocking back and forth. If you need a sharpener to quickly touch up anything but utility knives, this article is for you.
