I have never bought vinyl placemats before. We had them when I was a kid, and I associate them with sticky elbows. But I wanted to replace the heavy duty plastic shelf liner paper (the kind with ridges that can also be used in the fridge) with something a bit dressier for an exposed shelf in my kitchen. So I got these in gold.They are great. They are thin and they are flexible. And yes, they are elegant. The two tone color comes from using the reverse side as decorative elements on the opposite side. It's your choice which side to display. It's almost like they cut and sewed the different sides of the material into a design. When I first pulled them out of the box I thought they were a lattice weave with holes, but there are no holes. They just give that appearance because they are so thin. And they are incredible grippers too.
