Never fiddled with door handles and this is a lever that needs to move in the right direction. But when I realized I had to separate these little plates from the cylindrical part and remove them as unnecessary, this little round thing with a cylinder went very well after tapping with wood and a hammer. I then flipped the levers to the right side and tightened them with the supplied Allen wrench and it worked! The only thing I couldn't do was tighten the inside arm so it was as strong as the outside arm. I tried again with the same results and then I thought there would be no one in the toilet to get out so what's the difference. I kept it and it looks great on my very old door so I bought doors for other rooms that match the handles.
