This is a review of the LG 34GP83A. I've been saving money for months to get an ultra wide curved screen and I'm amazed at the quality that LG has to offer. Buying a monitor is a really confusing affair - the naming scheme is crazy, it's hard to know which combination of specs will suit your needs, and there seems to be a lack of satisfactory quality control. The last point is crucial. You're spending a lot of money on a screen that can have dead pixels, backlight bleeding, stuttering, flickering, cracks, chips, and a dozen other defects. And some companies won't offer you a replacement because they attribute a certain number of manufacturing defects. It makes you feel like you're playing. That's ridiculous. I'm going to make it as easy as possible for those of you who, like me, are just looking for a monitor to play with. This monitor runs at 144Hz at 1440p, which is currently optimal for gaming. There are higher resolutions, but most games are not optimized to handle that many frames per second at 4k resolution. For someone who has had a 1080p monitor maxing out at 60 fps for the last decade, the upgrade is just huge. Games run beautifully and smoothly like nothing you've seen before. Just remember to "turn on" your monitor as it doesn't run at the advertised refresh rate by default. On Windows 10, go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings > Display adapter properties and click the Monitor tab to select 144Hz. You must also use the included Displayport cable. 21:9 is the aspect ratio that defines the ultra-wide experience. Most films are shot in 21:9 (hence the black bars). I find the immersion in the game absolutely incredible. Not all games support 21:9, in this case you play with vertical black bars on both sides, which is not a problem at all as the game itself still works fine. For games that are supported though. Hoo boy I can never go back. I mainly play imperial games and RTS style games. Games like Total War: Warhammer 2, Age of Empires II, Frostpunk, Civilization V, and XCOM 2 were designed to be played on such a screen. Make sure you run a dead pixel check with sites like lcdtech.info. NOTE. CLEAN THE MONITOR WITH A MICROFIBER BEFORE TESTING. I want the world to know that I'm the idiot who thought three specks of dust were dead pixels. At this price there should be no excuse for factory defects and you deserve the monitor you paid for. So this monitor makes me happy every day when I come home from work. I recommend it with enthusiasm.
