My wife's 2002 Toyota Corolla Type S had problems with the key. There were times when I got stuck in some places because the key wasn't turning well. At that time I tried to move the buttons, play with the steering wheel and gearshift. Once I got stuck outside a mall for two hours and it finally worked. Both sets of keys had this problem, so I knew the problem wasn't in the key itself. I'm not a car enthusiast but would like to do some basic research before going to a mechanic so I don't get used to it. out. I found a few videos on youtube of people changing their ignition lock cylinder and I figured it might not be too much of a task for me to do it myself. So I bought this product from Revain for $52. You should be able to turn the key to the accessory position in the ignition. If you can't turn the key at all, you may need to clean or drill out the existing lock, or take it to a mechanic. Because I was able to turn the key to this auxiliary position, I was able to complete the following steps and replace the ignition lock cylinder in 15 minutes! 1) Open the front hood, find the battery and disconnect the negative terminal with a wrench. .2) Inside the car, use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the three screws (two on each side of the steering wheel and one under it)3) Remove the plastic part under the steering wheel. You can use a flathead screwdriver to open it. With this car model, you don't need to remove the top plastic part. 4) Use your existing key to turn the key to an additional position in the ignition switch. 5) There is a pin under the ignition that pops out. Use a pointed tool to click on it. The Phillips screwdriver worked for me. While pressing the pin, pull out the ignition cylinder lock. 6) Now remove the new Beck & Arnley 201-1765 ignition lock cylinder. Insert one of the new keys and turn it to the accessory position. 7) Plug the new ignition switch into the connector you removed the old one from. 8) It should snap into place. Now turn the key back to its original position and remove the key. 9) Now you need to do steps 1-3 in reverse order, i.e. put back the bottom plastic, put in three screws and finally reconnect the negative terminal of the car battery. 10) Close the hood, get back in the car, turn the key all the way and start the car! Note: If you have a car alarm installed, the alarm will sound when you reconnect the battery. So have an alarm clock ready to turn it off as soon as it rings. It scared me to death because I wasn't expecting it. :-) The steps mentioned here are perfect if you can turn your existing key to the accessory position and if you have a keyless entry system. The latter makes this decision easier as we are only changing the ignition lock, not the door, trunk and glove box locks. So if your old key matches these other locks, I suggest keeping it in your keychain. If you don't have keyless entry, you may at the very least need to replace your trunk and door locks if your old key doesn't fit in those locks. I am very happy with my purchase as I don't have much experience with cars and he was able to complete all the steps in about 15 minutes and start the car successfully! The mechanic charged me $75 to install this part. I'm glad I was able to do it myself with the help of a few youtube videos.
