Mech. I think it's normal but the item sent seems old. The one we received has a button to turn on the combination lock, except the batteries were completely dead and the battery contacts were corroded. Since these are tiny button cells, I can only assume they've been sitting for quite some time. My boy set up the combination and took it with him on his bike on his first day of school. I came home upset because the lock was "broken". In fact, it was just a cheap plastic cover peeled off; The lock was fine and I was able to snap the lid back into place. Overall still not a very good start.
