Review on Z Threaded Insert Internal Threads by Kurt Manning

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Structurally inadequate - overall unhappy purchase

I bought these for a woodworking project, they are advertised for hardwood and wanted to flush mount the threaded insert. I bought an installation tool for these inserts. I used the recommended drill bit size listed on the packaging (33/64"). However, when trying to install it into a project part, one of the top parts of the insert was cut off very easily - also causing a headache trying around how to deal with this non-removable insert and how I can fix my project with the brass insert sticking out.The first two pictures show the brass insert installed in my project with the top tabs cut off and eventually needing careful sanding. After this incident I used oak to check the dimensions of the pilot bit so I don't have the problem again. 32" pilot hole and 35/64" pilot hole. I needed a powered tool/bit All 3 had the top tab in the last/largest pilot hole (35/64") the Insert was at least nearly flush with the surface was. Once the tongue began to cut off, it was impossible to remove the insert. The insert is stuck and sheared off. This is done in a way that requires drilling out the insert with tools/equipment that I know most people don't always have in their workshops to remove. I have used EZ Lok products before with satisfied results but purchasing this product at the moment makes me doubt and question the quality of their products.

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
