Works great with the right tools

I bought a ready to assemble table that was missing a couple of threaded inserts. After consultation with the manufacturer's warranty department. Decided to go the DIY route and fix it myself. I've installed these types of threaded inserts before by hand with a screwdriver. It took a bit of muscle power to deploy them, and all deployments turned out to be cross-eyed. For this job, I wanted everything to be perfect. The addition to the paste tool looked interesting. I've seen it work well for…

Easy installation if you prepare in advance

After reading the reviews I was very wary of this setup. However, following the advice of these reviews, I had no trouble installing it. I use ¼-20 x 0.5 inch inserts on 2 walnut cutting boards. I used a 13/32 bit, screw wax and a ¼-20 long screw. with head cut off with 2 lock nuts as shown in the picture. From the evaluations it was clear that getting everything straight and running the insert straight would be the biggest challenge. This was a good reason to buy another very useful tool. I…

EZ LOC 400 M8 worked perfectly - buy an adapter!

I was initially skeptical of the amount of hole to drill and that no inserts were included. One reviewer advised using a 14mm Forstner bit, and he was right. I drilled a maple glue countertop so this was the worst option for super hardwood inserts. The 14mm bit worked perfectly and the inserts screwed in easily. I also bought a drill adapter specifically for bits that costs $10 a bit, it made turning bits very reliable. Make sure you turn the drill on at low speed and start very slowly, making…

Do some tests first.

I've used 1/4-20 and M8 bits for softwood, plywood and hardwood. I found early on that the recommended hole size doesn't always work. The recommended size is suitable for softwood, but not always for hardwood. Do a few trials before attempting to install them. Also, I have found that I cannot insert them with a screwdriver, the ends of the inserts are chipped and broken. I had the same problem with the custom EZ-Loc Paste Tool. Your tool works with soft wood, but not very hard. I use a tool…

Not really "EZ " unless you're a pro, but great results

I'm VERY happy with these inserts, but I wouldn't call them easy - at least for a beginner hobbyist like me . Here's what I learned after installing about 3 dozen of these. So I'm giving it a 4 and not a 5. I'm happy with the end result, definitely a 5. First, buy the matching EZ Lok Power Tool (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002091LQG). /ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) - this makes the installation MUCH easier. You may want to file the outer drive lugs several thousand as they…

Structurally inadequate - overall unhappy purchase

I bought these for a woodworking project, they are advertised for hardwood and wanted to flush mount the threaded insert. I bought an installation tool for these inserts. I used the recommended drill bit size listed on the packaging (33/64"). However, when trying to install it into a project part, one of the top parts of the insert was cut off very easily - also causing a headache trying around how to deal with this non-removable insert and how I can fix my project with the brass insert…

Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model

Difficult to install properly, practice on unnecessary boards!

The main result was that I was able to drive 28 EZ-LOC brass inserts into 3/4 inch red oak garden bench planks. Doing this the first time was VERY difficult to find a method that a) inserts inserts straight b) does not lift the wood around the insert and c) allows the insert to stay in the board when the setting tool is removed Dozens of uses before I felt confident enough to move onto real boards The tools I used were: a) hand drill (if you have a drill press for your board size and can use…
