Review on Z Threaded Insert Internal Threads by Brandon Show

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Do some tests first.

I've used 1/4-20 and M8 bits for softwood, plywood and hardwood. I found early on that the recommended hole size doesn't always work. The recommended size is suitable for softwood, but not always for hardwood. Do a few trials before attempting to install them. Also, I have found that I cannot insert them with a screwdriver, the ends of the inserts are chipped and broken. I had the same problem with the custom EZ-Loc Paste Tool. Your tool works with soft wood, but not very hard. I use a tool consisting of a bolt, some nuts and a washer installed in my drill press to put these things in place. Almost always works without stopping the drill, but not always. I recently gave up using m8 inserts. in a 40 year old oak tree that I restored from some criminally damaged furniture. The M8 will only fit a 14mm hole in such hardwood. I tested 1/2, 33/64 (recommended hole size), 13mm and 14mm. Inserts go through a 15mm diameter hole. I found that the only hole I could fit the insert into was a 14mm hole. At this size the thread barely engages the wood and the insert + hole looks unsightly. I've also found that they will split hardwood if it's not wide enough. You will delaminate the plywood if you don't have a solid base for the wood. At the moment I would like to find a tap that is designed to work with the external threads of this product. This would be very handy for use with hardwoods. As I said, do some tests before using them. You can test them before including them in the project plan.
