After reading the reviews I was very wary of this setup. However, following the advice of these reviews, I had no trouble installing it. I use ¼-20 x 0.5 inch inserts on 2 walnut cutting boards. I used a 13/32 bit, screw wax and a ¼-20 long screw. with head cut off with 2 lock nuts as shown in the picture. From the evaluations it was clear that getting everything straight and running the insert straight would be the biggest challenge. This was a good reason to buy another very useful tool. I used a Milescraft 1318 Drillmate to drill and guide the panel. This was very helpful as you could apply a lot of weight to help the plate retract without worrying about alignment. Wax on the insert and a little in the hole I place the insert on the shear bolt, resting on the locknuts I insert the shear bolt into the chuck of the drill guide, press down on the guide and slowly turn the locknut with a wrench. I think you can use ll too, but I didn't want to risk being naked. I repeated this three more times with no problems. You also don't run the risk of damaging or breaking the top of the insert, as I've seen in many overview photos with the insert installer purchased.
