The tool appears to be used. It's already covered in brake dust, and that's my hand out of the box and ratchet in hand. I'm not a mechanic and my hands were very clean before opening. It seems to be working well but I'm honestly a little taken aback that when I buy a new one I'm getting an obviously used item. I'm not sure what I'll do yet, maybe I'll send it back.
