Review on Red and Black Bolt Pack Pliers - Master Link and Combo Pliers by Derek Evans

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Nice but expected a little better fit and finish

This was a treat bought with a gift card. A few wolf tooth pieces I saw looked pretty good and functional so it was an easy decision. When it arrived I was expecting it to be packaged a little more neatly than it was but I chalked it up to having more function than form and that's what I expect from a cycling outfit. I bought it mainly for quick release pliers and link storage functions. Functionally, it basically works as described. The pliers worked great, slightly better than the pair of parkas I keep in my bike tool box. Slim and small but easy to use. The quick link storage slots hold two pairs of links a little loosely for my liking, but when folded they feel secure. When unfolded, the links do not hold so securely, they can be pulled out quite easily. A small problem as they mostly hold up. The triangular cutout on the presta valve is just brilliant and saved my ass one morning when my normally tight presta valve came loose for a slow leak. The weakening was my fault from pumping up a new tube in the morning. I forgot to tighten the valve when installing the hose, which I usually do with every hose installation. This is due to the perfect Lezyne thread on the pump fitting, which has the disadvantage of unscrewing the valve. Regardless, the tool saved me from having to remove the tire and tube that morning. So why only four stars, you ask. Well I feel like the fit and finish is a bit lacking. The pliers feel too loose, both unfolded and folded. The edges also feel slightly sharp, a slight wobble, but it adds to the rating. A flawless finish shows the machining, but I'm not including that in my rating. The rest of the anodizing is well done.

Pros
  • Great overall performance
Cons
  • Unusable features
