All you need is products that work the way you expect them to, and this one does. Yes, it has a short cord. I bought an extension cord for $1. It's plug and play. As usual, there is no optical drive on my new Asus computer. Although I don't play discs on my computer, I do use my computer to burn them. So I downloaded VLC media player (free) and WinX software (paid) and burned a disc. Worked perfectly. With a short cord, the drive fell and hung on the cord. Keep working! I recommend all three products that seem to work well together. Everything is very intuitive and if you are a little techy you don't need to read the instructions. Disc loaded, WinX burned and played on VLC. Very easy.
