Review on D-Link DWA-162 Wi-Fi Network Adapter | Wireless Dual Band, 900 Mbps USB by James Wonsley

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great little adapter, but it takes work to get 5GHz on Windows 10

This is a great little USB adapter and it works better than I thought for the price. The only problem is that the Windows 10 plug and play drivers only provide 2.4GHz and the dlink drivers are very outdated. So if you want 5GHz, you'll have to do some work. ---- Get 5GHz on Windows 10 ---- 1. You need to find the Ralink RT35732 chipset. Now go to mediatek.com/en/downloads1/downloads/3. Look for the download that goes with your part number, which should be RT307X (the one I'm using at the moment).4. Run the installer BUT do not install the wifi utility. Only one driver.5. After installing the drivers, open Device Manager. (Hotkey: Windows key + x) 6. Locate your D-Link under Network Adapters and right click, then click Update Driver Software. Click Browse my computer to select the driver software. 8. Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer. Two drivers should appear, click on the latest version. Dates are listed next to the drivers. Example: I am using version: 5.1.25.0 [2015-10-28]10. Click 'Next' and wait for it to install and enjoy your 5GHz signal! Again, I only tested this on my Windows 10 machine.

Cons
  • Cable is shorter than other options
