I hand washed the shield before first use. After 5 minutes in the oven, the strong smell of plastic in the kitchen brought me back to the oven. I removed the shield to finish the cake. I then washed the screen in the dishwasher for a more thorough cleaning. After that, it still smelled strongly of plastic the next time I used it, which I feared would at least spoil the taste and at worst saturate the food with chemicals that can be harmful if eaten. I returned the product and received a refund.
