torture for my birds. Maybe not!

We were thrilled when one of our blue jays landed on this feeder on the first day of installation. However, this was short-lived. Poor "Bill" tried to pull the nut out for about 10 minutes and was then left with nothing. The bars are too stiff and didn't even let him get one and we even got stuck on the sides and only entered halfway! His friend "Wilma" called him back and he yelled back. It was terrible! We took it off and stuck her peanuts on the fence posts like we used to do. Looks like we'll be running in the snow this winter to keep them happy and we're fine. UPDATE: I had to go back and update this review because we found a way to make it work. The rings are too stiff for even a big-beaked blue jay to pull nuts out of, and each one is welded to the mainshaft. (Except for the very top where you fill it in) However, we just place every other stick on top of the bottom and now they can sit on top and pull the nuts out easily. It was a little tricky because we didn't want to sprinkle them so much that the nuts would fall out. I think we found the right spacing and hope this helps. Of course, this is a very durable feeder! UPDATE 11/28/2018 OK. We tried but the Blue Jays wanted nothing more to do with this feeder. Sigh, I guess they're not a forgiving bunch. It's best to shoot them from the top of the fence posts.
