When mounting the unit on internal corner platforms inside the rails, the maximum width of the unit to be supported is 27 1/2":5" platform on each side, at least 1" from each end of the rail to the corner of the rail pocket and 15 1/2 inches of open rail in between. In this case, too, only a tiny piece of the rail remains, which can be fixed with a screw clamp. I wouldn't go over 25 inches on either side just to be on the safe side. Yes, you can mount a larger, solid, flat-bottomed unit on the corner edges instead of the inside corner platforms. This is a somewhat flimsy product, not for very large or very heavy devices. I'll build something myself to get the job done safely. The included tape measure is listed in Chinese tsunami and metric units - it has no US inches. The product could be greatly improved by marking the tubes with gauge notches on both ends to allow the tube to fit the right and left grommet. This is necessary to evenly distribute the load.
