Review on πŸ“Ά Mini PCI-E to USB Adapter with SIM Slot for WWAN/LTE 3G/4G Network Cards by Stephen Lunn

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Works if you know what it is - REQUIRES WWLAN mini-PCI-e + SIM with an active account to work. SIM cards with adapters are problematic.

works as intended. However, a corresponding WWLAN card is required. WWLAN cards are usually designed to be built into a laptop (sometimes a mobile router). If you don't know what a WWLAN card is, this won't work for you. The WWLAN card usually provides the laptop with 3G or 4G mobile internet - you still need to insert the SIM card into the slot of the laptop. This box allows you to take the card that normally fits in your laptop and put the card in this box instead, giving you a slot to insert your SIM card. I've found that this box becomes problematic if you don't use a regular sized SIM card, but instead use a Nano or Micro SIM with an adapter. After a few dozen uses of the Micro/Nano SIM+ adapter, the box stopped reading the SIM card normally. I bought two of these boxes and one broke and I sent it back, then the second box broke soon after. However, I've found that they still work if I instead attached a piece of tape to the bottom of the SIM card (to make it easier to remove later) and just plugged the card in without the adapter - lining up the contacts. That is the main reason for 4 instead of 5 stars. After realizing this I canceled the return of the first box and am now using both boxes with the tape trick. It requires some hacking skills to get this working - if you're looking at this solution, you're probably aware of that. If you don't like hacking, you probably want a more customized solution than this. It's not a box that you put your SIM in and turn on and it works right out of the box. In addition to this box, you need a WWLAN card and an account + SIM card compatible with the WWLAN card. The WWLAN card I use costs 8 times this box and the mobile operator + SIM card is charged extra per month. Keep in mind that this actual box costs very little compared to the whole solution. The main reason you'll want this box is if you want to use active 3G/4G service, which is now tied to a specific laptop or hotspot - and have other means of accessing it.

Pros
  • handy thing
Cons
  • so far so good
