Great alternative to more expensive (and heavier) cases

My AV bag just kept getting bigger and bigger. With each new item purchased, it became increasingly difficult to find something in the bag without almost emptying it. First I looked at suitcases with reinforced lids and locks. Very expensive, heavy and just as easily stolen by someone who wants to steal it, so I took two cases of PFC. One each for audio and video. The first thing I did was for the audio. Step #1: Take your time and plan the placement of all the elements. Take pictures of the different layouts with your mobile phone and then decide. It's amazing how easy it is to forget what was where once you start moving things. Step #2: Carefully outline each item with a marker tip, tilting the tip inward so the stroke is slightly smaller than the item. You can enlarge the section at any time. Step #3: Remove the inner foam sheet and then carefully cut out the rails with an electric cutter. There are videos on YouTube for this. I made the mistake of cutting the first styrofoam with a bread knife. Although it worked, it was a mess and the blade wasn't as clean as when using an electric knife. It will not harm the electric knife in the slightest. I appreciate the design of these cases. The handle and hinges are almost flush for less snagging and/or breakage. The amount of foam is significant at both the top and bottom. The gates stay closed, do not lock, although there is a cable lock, or it can be clipped onto the handle. This lock (from Revain) fits: TSA approved cable luggage locks, reusable combination with aluminum body. Although I still carry my gear bag with me, it only holds my audio/video gear and is still way too heavy!

Pros
  • Flat foam padding on bottom and pleated padding in lid
Cons
  • Poorly thought out
