Receipts: I lift the paper release lever to manually feed the carrier sheet. My "carrier sheet" is the bottom few inches of a zippered freezer bag. I align my "carrier sheet" so that it is narrow left to right and reaches the top of the input tray. If I notice static I use my breath on and in the bag. The result is zero traffic. Readability: When using any scanner, the main disadvantage is readability and file size. When the image quality setting is lowered from 100%, file sizes shrink quickly at first and readability slowly decreases. The readability is better with reduced quality than with reduced resolution (dots per inch). A 600 DPI file at 10% quality was more readable than a 300 DPI file of the same size at 40% quality. For a given file size, the readability of multi-page TIFF files was slightly better than PDF, but navigating large files was slower for TIFF than PDF. I scanned math text (including small characters) at 600 DPI and saved it to a TIFF file with lossless LZW compression. The results were excellent. "Black & White" option did not reduce file size compared to grayscale; I use grayscale. The quality setting does not affect text search (OCR). "Text Enhancement" is useful for text; "blurred" has less effect. Document Capture Pro Software: Many commands must be used with the mouse instead of the keyboard. After scanning, pages can be added or inserted to a new scan, from a JPG, BMP, TIFF or PNG file, or from a PDF file created by Epson. Pages can be deleted, rotated or skewed. (A scan job can turn all pages.) I cannot edit an old scan file without doing a new scan. Originals: If the top of the document is folded or has staple holes, I put the paper in first. I flatten the paper around the holes in the staples. When using a paper cutter, I only cut 5 sheets at a time to reduce dust. For valuable, irreplaceable photos or documents, I would use a flatbed scanner rather than an ADF scanner. Scanner hardware: The scanner is smaller than required for my purposes. When I'm scanning thick paper, I keep the output tray closed so my prints land on a smooth surface. Skipping the output tray can make the feed speed smoother. The USB 2 speed and connection lends itself to high-quality, high-resolution grayscale scanning. I don't know if that has something to do with the color. As expected, the scanner emits a low, shrill noise.
