I'm also not sure if you turn it on in a good way from where you last used it. It takes an extra 10-30 seconds for the GPS to connect and the same goes if you use it for a day and then wait a few days before using it again. Yes, it has a backlight and will turn off after a short time (I can't remember how long) if you don't press the button. Also, pressing any key (possibly any) will turn on the backlight for a few seconds. You can also switch from English to metric measurement.
