It's wide enough to be easily centered and not rub on the chain, no matter the gear. I bought a different brand chain guide which I ended up returning because I couldn't center the guide so it wouldn't rub against my chain in top or bottom gear. I have a 9 speed cassette and this chain guide keeps the chain in place even on very bumpy descents. I have a clutch derailleur, but it's usually good for a hardtail to have something small on the chainring to keep the chain from falling off. Since the installation I haven't had a single interruption.
