This sugar bowl reminds me of old times. They're similar to those you might see at the lunch counter at Woolworth's or Wlagreens. It has a metal top with a small valve underneath that is a fill hole. The lower part is made of glass and can therefore be washed in the dishwasher. If the substance you want to pour has the consistency of sugar, then it will do. If you want to put other powders like powdered milk (or milk replacer) it may not work because the hole for the hole is small and this powder can clog it. My husband uses it for Splenda powder and it really works, but as it's a light and fluffy material it does get a bit stuck on the hole. Since the weather here in Michigan is very dry, he can use it that way for the time being. But when it gets wetter and that becomes a problem, he plans to widen the hole a bit with an awl.
