I'm not an expert, I just read reviews and watched tutorial videos before deciding on this brand, type and diameter of solder wire. Kester seems to be pretty much the industry standard, or alongside a few others, and my experience to date has lived up to those expectations. Through trial and error I found that my soldering iron heats up more than it should. I reduced it a bit and now everything works much better: good solders, the iron tip stays tinned and doesn't oxidize as quickly and hardly smokes. With these colder temperatures, I love the smell of core flow fumes! If the core stream gets hot enough to ignite, then yes, that acrid smoke is really unpleasant.
