BMW diagnostic cables can be confusing because there are so many brands plus worries about the color of the connector itself but I found this cable does everything what i wish i could do on my e46 touring. You can test individual gauges, headlights, and engine controls, and some built-in programs can do a lot more than I can. In fact, there are probably four programs that I didn't even use because I didn't understand them, but I didn't have to because I liked using INPA, which is one of the programs that come with it. Diagnostic cables are a lot more complicated than the vag-com I use on my VWs and Audis and a lot less automated, but there are resources online to help you navigate through everything you need to do.
