Review on Discontinued Canon EOS 50D DSLR Camera Body for Sale by Zack Frazier

Better than I thought

This has been my first Canon DSLR in a very long time and I wasn't sure about switching from Nikon but decided to check it out. In general this is a good camera. The noise level is indeed greater than Nikon's, my old D90 took some nice shots at high ISO where the 50D struggles. I wouldn't go above ISO 800 or so with this camera. Thing is I never do that so it's ok for me but might be a problem for some. The key layout I would say needs some work. I would give Nikon a big advantage here as all the buttons are easily accessible and navigable, while Canon has to search and fiddle around to find even the basic stuff. I'll admit a lot of this is because I need to know the camera better and it will improve over time, but I got the hang of the D90 in about 20 minutes of use. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Canon is bad, but I need some more work, that's all. The camera is fast and starts up almost before I know I want to turn it on. (Almost) While I feel Canon really needs to add more AF points, the nine it has seems to do its job well, even following moving subjects it keeps up with them without a hint to the desire to slow down. Just make sure that your memory card keeps up with this camera when your shutter is in auto release mode. As mentioned in some reviews, I've noticed that the tracking tends to shift to brighter areas in the frame. This wasn't a big issue for me, but it's something you might want to investigate. I also really like the solid construction. It's like a tank, and knowing the metal and weather seal will keep it going long after I've stopped firing and put it away. Nothing about this cell seems weak. Soft images bothered me, although that's not a problem with this camera. Yes, if you're using cheaper glass you might see some softness, but it's not the camera that's causing this. I got some pretty sharp shots with the 28-135 and I think it's a good base lens. Yes, my primes (I like primes) work better, but I enjoyed using this camera's lens for easy walks when I just wanted to carry one lens with me and nothing else. I also noticed that this camera doesn't have image overlay or multiple exposure settings. These are common on Nikon cameras, although there are cheaper models, and it saddens me that they are not present on this camera. Yes, you can do it in Photoshop with CS4, it's no problem, but I prefer to do things in camera and only use PS for minor adjustments and tweaks. Canon really needs to add them. For the price at the moment I have to say that this camera is a bargain and a better deal compared to the 7D which doesn't really do much. I might look into it after a price cut or two, but it's a much better deal now and I think anyone looking for a bargain on a similarly powerful DSLR that's just as fast and accurate will buy the 50D be satisfied.
