Review on πŸ–₯️ Hewlett Packard C4505A 8230e: High-performance USB CD-Writer for External Use by Johnny Wheat

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good device for beginners

Even if I had some problems with this device, I still find the price-performance ratio good. I had this thing and was up and running in minutes thanks to its plug and play capability. At the time I had the previous "My CD" software. The CR-R that came with the recorder was not working so HP had to be contacted. I got a "High Speed Media" error and I'm not too happy about it. With the help of a tech (we all agree they need the 800 number) this was resolved by simply going into "options" and saying DO NOT run a write speed test. Then we set the write speed to 1X. It seemed to work, but several hard drives failed during the recording, so I called back. This time it ran a system health check and completely shut down all autorun menu programs. But I wouldn't bother with a product that would force me to disable my antivirus software and figured if it required that much effort I'd return the 8230. I've since found that this is the case even if I reboot my system before writing with all autoload items intact, so I have no problems burning data or audio CDs. You could say it's not perfect, but I certainly consider it a minor inconvenience and not a possible coaster. Yes, it's slow, but I don't need speed and I'm completely uncomfortable installing anything on my computer. After updating to the Burn Now software I didn't turn off the write speed test or check the write speeds, but I haven't had any problems with data CDs and I believe my son is recording audio. We use several WalMart CDs with no problem, as well as anything that is available in stores. For the price (I bought mine cheap from a reputable auction site) and two phone calls, I'll still give it a four.
