Review on Enhanced Air Vent Car Mount Pedestal: Arkon Replacement or Upgrade with Dual T Pattern Compatibility by Tim Hodzic

Simple, but most importantly effective

I was looking for a way to mount the GPS on the dashboard (not the windshield) without gluing anything. I figured this vent mount might work if attached to the top (fixed) vent louvers of my Saturn Aura. This worked really well for this, with two small caveats: 1. I had to remove the underside of the "footboard" on this mount because my vents are placed so steeply that this little brace didn't do anything in my situation and - even on the mounting case folded - actually caused the bleed clamps to be angled too high, causing them to lose some support. In some situations this little support can come in handy, but in my case it wasn't there and was easy to remove by simply squeezing the plastic piece and prying it open with your hands. It's just as easy to reattach if you need it later, and there are actually two different attachment points (one slightly higher, one slightly lower) to accommodate different ventilation settings.2. The vent clips have interlocking angled tips (imagine two small opposite triangles whose tips intersect in a horizontal plane), making them easy to attach and (almost) just as easy to detach from the vents. It sticks to my fixed vent wings fairly well, but if you pull a little it all slides off. I solved this problem by taking two small inner panel fasteners I had laying around and (once the vent was where I wanted it) stuck them under the small circular space you have just behind the point mounts to the main body can see from the bracket. Because it's on the other end of the vent clip swing, it helps maintain pressure on the vent clip jaws so they don't bend and release as easily. I imagine small pieces of stiff foam stuck in there would work just as well. (I'm surprised no manufacturer has come up with a better locking mechanism for this principle, rather than simply relying on the spring force of the plastic to loosen the vent clips a bit.) The Magellan mount's ball joint holds up well. , and - as far as plastic goes - this product as a whole appears to be a serviceable piece of polymer. I'm glad I bought it, even if it took some fiddling. Provided it doesn't just fall apart, I'd say for the price it's hard to beat.

Pros
  • Sleek design
Cons
  • Almost never
