I always thought that the passion for embroidery is inherent only in old grandmothers, who sit at the window in the evenings and slowly make stitches on the canvas while the radio is buzzing. But one day my opinion changed dramatically. At a friend's, I saw an unusually beautiful picture. She was so beautiful that I just fell in love. I asked where she bought such a beauty. Answer: I sewed it myself. So this is embroidery? I thought it was a painting. That's it, from that moment on I got the idea of creating a painting and acquired a new hobby. This hobby is not too expensive and all that is needed for work is a needle, hoop and thread. That's the thread and will be discussed in this review. So, the choice of threads for embroidery is huge. But since I was a beginner embroiderer, I decided to stop at a more or less cheap option. Suddenly, I donβt succeed beautifully and Iβll give up embroidery, or I donβt like such painstaking work and I will also leave the idea. In general, I chose Gamma floss threads. A few words about the company itself. Gamma is a Russian company, but they work on European equipment. The floss is sold in boxes of 24 skeins of the same color or in larger packages, but of a different color. Over time, I have accumulated many hanks of floss, because often only a few centimeters of thread are needed from a whole hank for any work. I want to say about the quality of floss threads. I think that these threads are ideal for beginner embroiderers. Because they: - cheap - have a huge number of shades. Currently, there are more than 6 hundred different colors and the palette is periodically updated with new shades. - do not twist during operation - lay down on the canvas with even stitches - do not fade in daylight and do not fade when washed But for me there is one drawback: the threads are not bright enough and not shiny enough. But this is for me personally... Each skein has 2 labels attached. The first one shows the numbers that determine the color of the thread. These numbers are very convenient to use when you buy embroidery patterns. Each scheme shows the numbers of colors that are recommended for embroidering a particular work. Each number consists of 4 digits. Even if the number is 3-digit, there are still four digits - just put zeros at the beginning. The second label contains the following information: 1. Skein length - 8 meters 2. The composition of the thread. Here I will dwell in more detail. As you can see from the photo, Gamma floss is made of 100% cotton. Why is it good? Firstly, cotton is very durable and if the thread is not torn with all its dope, then the thread itself will never break under normal tension. Secondly, mercerized cotton. This means that the thread is specially treated to add shine and extra strength. Although I would still argue about the shine ... Threads are sold in skeins in the form of a skein. A skein is a thread with several additions. In floss "Gamma" each thread has 6 additions. To work, you need to separate the thread into 1,2 or 3 additions. In some cases (with a rare canvas or requirements for a particular work), a whole skein of 6 additions is used. Now I will tell you HOW to separate several threads from a skein. First, you need to cut the thread to the desired length and hold the tip of the thread in one hand. Split this tip and pull out (exactly pull out) ONE thread! The remaining 5 threads will tangle into a ball - it's okay! Just shake this ball or run your hand over it and the ball will turn into a straight skein again. If you pull 2 or more threads, then there is a chance of tangling the threads. Now I'll tell you how long you need to cut the thread. There are options here. The minimum length is a thread of 30 centimeters. Craftswomen can cut threads up to 1 meter long. But here you need training and the need for such a length. It is clear that it is not rational to embroider a couple of crosses with such a long thread. I think that over time, each embroiderer determines for herself the length that is comfortable for her personally. But the standard length is considered to be the length equal to the distance from the fingertips to the elbow - after all, this distance is different for each person. This length allows you to reduce the load on the joints of the hand during work. I bring to your attention the picture that I am working on at the moment. This is Gzhel and for work you need mainly threads of blue shades. Such shades in "Gamma" are quite enough to create all the color transitions. Finally, I want to once again compare embroidery with the artist's canvas. Only in the hands of a craftswoman, instead of an easel, brushes and paints, there will be hoops, needles and threads. And these tools are in no way inferior to the tools of the artist. And the art canvas turns out no worse!
