My old top gate poles are finally dying. They were installed in minutes. The only downside I have is that they are so strong that it takes a lot more strength to close the hatch. I expect it will get easier as they wear down a bit. I was used to the original supports that came with the car, which seemed just right to open and close the sunroof. I really believe that the extra buoyancy means they last a lot longer than the original. It would be great if the closing force required decreased with age, but it's not a deal breaker anyway. It's HARD, to say the least.
