I love iced coffee and have been using the Toddy Maker system for over 10 years. But cleaning and coffee waste eventually made me look for something else. After reading about many other systems, the simplicity and cost of this system made me want to try it. I'm glad I did. Although it took me a few tries to get it down to the right strength, and even in the least messy way, I was consistently making at least a batch or two a week. It's so simple that I'm drinking a lot more than usual (which to me might not be the healthiest thing in the world). For me, the trick to making a batch with the least amount of mess was to fill the cone a GOOD solid inch from the top. Then I used the kitchen faucet on low, with a glass and filter underneath, and slowly mixed the water with a butter knife and coffee grounds (I only use Cafe Du Monde). Sometimes I have to stop the water and stir again to get the water through the filter, especially when the pitcher is full. Then I simply unscrew the strong plastic lid, snap open the cork, shake it out of the jar and let it sit for a good 24 hours (not the usual 12 I used with Toddy Maker). At the end of the day all you have to do is remove the filter - I usually set it in a tall drinking glass to allow the soaked coffee grounds to drain (I don't want to lose the concentrate!) and pour it into the main glass. glass as the glass fills. I usually pour the concentrate from the pitcher into another container (but that's not necessary; it works well as a pitcher). I do this to start preparing a new batch before I finish the current batch. That means being honest with myself about how much I want to drink so I can make a new batch in the comfort of my own home. Cleaning is easy. When the filter is finally completely empty (I leave it for a few hours) I just flip it over and throw the rest in the trash. I then rinse thoroughly and clean the lid and jar at the same time – sometimes I also leave the filter in the back of the jar and soak it in soapy water overnight to ensure no coffee residue is left on the filter. While it may seem too basic and cheap to be worth (a jar, a pouring lid and a metal filter), it really works. I can best make about two and a half servings from a can of Cafe Du Monde coffee grounds. My batch will last almost a week (I drink too much but it's that good) - I use about 1/4-1/3 cup of coffee concentrate and mix it with about 1 and 3/4 cups of water. With a healthy dose of milk or cream, this makes a very good cup of coffee. If I want hot coffee, I just use hot water and add it to the cold concentrate. I'm so happy I decided to take the plunge - I haven't looked back since!
