Attempting to replace a great Black and Decker electric steamer that has lasted 9 years and looks very similar to this one. The first problem was that the plastic lid was difficult to remove from the steamer bowl (bowl) because it was wrapped in plastic and made a very tight connection. I could easily crack the paper-thin, thin-walled plastic bowl trying to unwrap it. I compared it to my old steamer and the sides of the steamer bowl are only 1/3 to 1/4 the thickness of the Black and Decker which only appears second hand. In no case will it last longer than 6 months. Accidental dripping into the sink or counter while washing will result in a fatal crack. It is unimaginable that something exposed to very high temperatures and constant washing could become so unbearably thin. Exposure to steam makes a material that is already too thin even more prone to cracking. I have returned this unit and will look for a glass or metal unit if I can find one with a non-carcinogenic non-stick base. Why don't they keep making quality and amazingly reliable Black and Decker models?
