I've run it in the garage for a few hours on low temp and it seems to be working. It warmed the garage to a comfortable level but there are TWO issues with it that make me want to return it or replace it or give it to someone less sensitive than me and buy a different product from a different manufacturer . ONE. It's noisy. Even on low settings, it was LOUD and seemed to want to rev up all the time. It mostly starts off quietly, but then gradually gets louder and eventually kicks into high gear no matter what the thermostat is set or what setting (low/medium/high) you choose. It appears to be a small multi-bladed fan that spins rapidly to move air. It would be better to have more blades and a slower fan would move the same amount of air SILENTLY. Otherwise it seemed very durable as it feels heavy due to its small size. I suspect the safety features (lots of them = excellent) add a lot to the weight and quality of the parts and this makes them strong and heavy. TWO. Maybe because it's BRAND NEW but it gives off a very obvious hydrocarbon/plastic odor which left me disappointed. After several hours of operation, it will NOT burn out. The plastic of the switches and dials looks like cheap parts and is probably NOT low VOC made. It would be nice if it burned out, but after a week of hours of work, it's not quite there. The time will show. Three stars for the LOUD Mini Heater that has an odor is a generous rating and only because it appears to work as advertised. This heater model may be suitable for a warehouse where odor and loud noise during operation is not usually a problem. I also have a VORNADO VH110 that works great to this day, is very quiet, heats rooms well and does not emit any odors. Sometimes VORNADO makes a good product. That can not be. Otherwise it seems to be a good heater. Time will tell, but for 4 months of the year it can be used and then kept or donated. Summary (5 stars minus problems = 3 stars)1. A very nice little heater that works exceptionally well but can be a little too noisy for some people. For me, sound was important because the space I use it in is exceptional and deliberately quiet. -1/2 stars2. Produces a strong "manufacturing smell" (like a new car smell, but not as pleasant) that doesn't seem to go away forever. A call to Vornado confirmed the odor is normal and is part of a protective coating on the heating elements that "should" burn off within the first 45 minutes of use. In my case that wasn't the case, but I'm more sensitive to smell than most people, so smell was/is an issue that will hopefully become less obvious with time. -1/2 stars3. I bought this heater based on my previous very positive experience with Vornado products. The two issues discussed in this review (smell and noise) were not issues with the 2012 Vornado heater. I was disappointed. -1 star. UPDATE - March 2021 - Heater works perfectly and was purchased in January 2021. My 3 star rating (above) is now 4 stars. That's why. The plastic smell has all but disappeared and is becoming less and less of an issue (although it's still there, hardly) for 1 room's heating. This is a very strong, very stable, very durable little heater that is the little brother of the Vornado Velocity 5. If the smell was the only problem I would give this heater 5 stars but the smell is still there for many months. After the purchase but MUCH smaller, hence 4 stars. I would give this heater 5 stars if the sound wasn't an issue. What makes this heater great is that it produces a lot of hot air and heats up the room quickly if you don't mind a little noise. However, noise in a very quiet room is an issue. The fan is powerful and spins fast because the blades are small and therefore noisy. If it had a bigger fan, it could spin slower while still delivering the same airflow, and be a lot quieter too, but that could make the heater bigger (less portable) and more expensive overall. The discontinued VORNADO VH110 is about the same size and heats up just as quickly, but is SIGNIFICANTLY quieter. Final VERDICT: If I could buy back a NEW VORNADO VH110 heater I would happily buy it in place of the Vornado Velocity 3 model, especially since the two main issues (above) are still issues for me. Is the Vornado Velocity 3 a good heater? Absolutely. This is a fantastic heater for the price and in most cases there are no problems. A simple solution to the noise it makes would be to leave the heater on for 30 minutes to heat the room, then turn it off to ensure silence and repeat as needed. This is a minor inconvenience that should earn most people 4-5 stars. VORNADO VH110 can work quietly, quietly, quietly in the background for hours. The final rating is 4 stars. And I will keep the heater for myself, I will not return it and I will not give it away. This is a really good heater to keep clean and in a pinch a perfect replacement for an old VORNADO VH110 model that is no longer working.
