Washed twice before use. The first time in vinegar, the second time with detergent. There are a few leftover threads in the washing machine, but it's not scary. Simply wipe with a cloth. I had to shake out the villi once as they dried, and in the end they turned out to be full again. No worse than any new towel. There were a few threads hanging from some of the towels, but after drying I was able to cut them off. The towels seem absorbent enough to be used and sometimes they fall onto the floor over time, but very few. I have several other towels that I once bought, they are much softer than this one, but got double the price on this purchase. They do a good cleaning job. I noticed that towels are not all the same size. Some were a little smaller than others, but not by much.
