I wear true hearing aids and I've been testing a number of sound amplifiers over the past year. It's been interesting seeing these devices improve. The ones I got last year were solely sound amplifiers. That is they tended to amplify all frequencies as you turned the volume up. Some had noise cancellation and a couple of different programs for different listening situations. Then came along the combination sound amplifiers with Bluetooth capability. In addition to amplifying all frequencies they also connected to Bluetooth so they functioned as Bluetooth earbuds do as well. They stream music and phone calls right from your phone or any device supporting Bluetooth. I find this a big improvement over pure sound amplifiers. In general I've found these work quite well for streaming. Then comes along this Maihear device. It is a sound amplifier with Bluetooth capability and works well. But the +++++ in my title indicates it has something extra and indeed it does. It can be customized by the Soundhear app, which brings a whole new level of functionality. On the Bluetooth side, it lets you customize the frequency response, much like a sound equalizer. This lets you customize the music to emphasize certain frequencies and de-emphasize others. On the hearing side, it can give you a hearing test and modify the frequency responses according to the results for each ear. This lets this device become closer to a hearing aid. I don't know the power output of this device but it seems to me to be reminiscent of the types of devices that are soon to be available over the counter and sold as hearing aids for those who have up to moderate hearing loss. There are also 4 program modes selectable from the app.The app has another feature I love. You can actually input an audiogram by frequency for each ear. If you have one, these devices can be customized even more finely. I got new hearing aids a few months ago and I input my audiogram into the app and I am very impressed by the response of these devices. The sound is not as good as from my quite powerful hearing aids but it is good enough to be a backup to my aids. This ability makes these sound amplifiers a cut above others I have tested so far. The only drawback I've seen with these devices is they only give you about 7 hours of hearing improvement before they run out of charge. The case can give 4 recharges. With the physical design they are not as unobtrusive as true hearing aids but they look like many Bluetooth headphones these days. I also wish you could adjust hearing volume from the device itself.I think these sound amplifiers / Bluetooth buds are a real steal for the money and have the potential to help many people in my opinion. They have a lot of capability and perform quite well indeed. 4.5 stars.
