These connectors work OK on typical 16 gauge wire used these days, except you have to split the wire down the middle which is a hassle. I like the older Portfolio screw tight connectors which connect both wires at the same time better, but those are quite expensive these days if you can find them at all.These do NOT work on the older heavy gauge (10-12 gauge?) D-shaped power lines typical of 15 year old installations like mine. The pricks cannot penetrate to the power and the twist connector destroys itself in the process of trying to make the connection. You can jump from from a smaller gauge wire connected to the larger. However, it is usually a good practice to make sure there is a little bit of bare wire available.
