If you're buying this to replace a dead CD, fine. If you're buying to replace a drive that can't read certain discs - in my case old CDs with some wear and tear - you can consider my experience: I bought this drive to replace LG's built-in "Super Multi" DVD rewriter : GH24Ns70. Cause: LG "Super Multi" did not read some old music CDs. However. The old HP DVD/CD drive reads most of those old music CDs, as does the old USB CD/DVD drive I plugged into the Windows 7 system I bought this replacement for to read those "unreadable" CDs. USB drive issue: Ripping a music CD can be incredibly slow. I installed this Asus drive today and as mentioned, it won't read some old music CDs - all but one of those old CDs were read by the other drives mentioned. The new Asus drive burned the CD perfectly and read the Linux installation DVD I burned yesterday. Aside from some old CDs being unreadable, this seems normal. However, the same thing happened to the one he replaced. Something I've learned by converting my music CDs to FLAC files: sometimes even if my drives can't read/copy the CD or some files on the CD, I can create an image file (iso, nrg if you use Nero etc.) of this CD, burn it to a blank CD and then copy it to FLAC files. This worked with all but one or two CDs and they were badly scratched. Do not ask why. I do not know. With the right software (maybe VLC) you should be able to copy directly from an image file. Lesson learned. Never throw anything away. In the meantime, it's always good to have a backup.
