Review on Planet Bike Protege 8 Function Computer by Brian Page

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Outperforms more expensive computers

Planet Bike Protege 8.0 shows me everything I want to see on one screen, unlike almost every other bike computer on the market: Current speed Ride time Distance traveled Average speed Top speed The last two items appear on the bottom line of the display, which can also be configured to show total miles (odometer) or the time of day. I decided against buying the next model that can also display temperature as the previous computers I've tried weren't accurate thermometers. I put the computer on the front wheel of my tadpole tricycle. On a powered hang glider, the sensor attachment point is on the right side, but the only space available for a computer is on the left. The connecting cable is about four inches shorter than it needs to be, so I made an adjustable mount for the sensor to place it within two millimeters of the magnet on the left wheel. The distance between the magnet and the sensor is critical, but no more so than other computers I've used. A wireless computer would be easier to install but more expensive and potentially less reliable. The computer didn't have a preset for my tire size (20 x 1.5) so I entered custom measurements. I haven't exactly tested the accuracy of the distance, but it seems good. The display is easy to read. The feature switching method is unusual, but it works. Instead of pressing buttons, slide the computer up in its spring-loaded mount. Press and release to change functions; Press and hold to reset trip information. The computer doesn't look or feel reliable, but it still works after a month of use and a few rains. I expect it to be as durable as others in its price range. Overall, I am satisfied and can recommend the computer.
