I bought both Small and Medium and let my 8 year old son decide which size he likes best. My 8 year old is of average height and weight. I think the small size was perfect for him but he preferred the medium size. It's on the younger/smaller end of the range recommended for a medium size and it's definitely a bit larger, but he was concerned that he'd outgrow the small too quickly and he also claimed that the arms in the are too tight for little ones. (Disclaimer: I think he also prefers to be associated with "average" because he's already a big kid.) See photos. Excellent quality.
