If you embroider without a stand, then your work is not the best. It takes some getting used to as your hoop is held in one place and you have to move around, but no back pain for me, I don't have to look for a random surface to balance myself, awkwardly balancing the hoop on my knee and my chest. Your French knots will look like you really know how to look. Don't wait until you feel like this could be something to invest in. You will disappoint and burn yourself out if you are not extremely stubborn about waiting for the moment when you feel it's worth it. The new stand seems to have a deeper lamp which allows you to hold more of the hoop which is a definite improvement! My hoop hasn't slipped out in the middle of a stitch yet.
