I'm a house mom, not a carpenter. I bought my son a double bed at a discount store and didn't realize until we got home to install it, the side rails were missing. My husband works half a month and my son was dying to have his bed fixed so I went to the local lumberyard and bought 6" boards [and smaller 1" boards to attach to the underside of the side rails to make to support the horizontal slats. . on], painted over and sealed, then stupidly realized afterwards that some kind of hooks or brackets were needed - as I said, I'm not a gifted person. through her and I'm so glad I did. It took some time and a few tries to get the side rails to be flush with the head and foot rests without leaving any gaps [thanks to the person who left the detailed review somewhere below for warning about incorrect installation] and now it has my son an incredibly strong bed that frankly is probably a lot stronger than if the side rails were included. Nothing beats heavyweight American natural wood and steel.
