I've had this lens before; However, I mainly used it for duplicating slides. In that respect it was excellent. I used newer macro lenses with longer focal lengths; and admittedly they cost more than the extra money required to buy these new lens/optics designs. However, the limited full functionality of this lens with current cameras is the only real downside. I had the opportunity to use it again; and I have to say it's better than I thought. In the past, photographers bought premium macro lenses in different diopters to avoid the expense of buying an expensive macro lens. Today (at least for the Nikon version) this lens should be the best alternative. Actual macro photography (unless you're shooting moving video) is typically done with slow, tedious, careful, and complex settings. Yes, new features like rear LCDs make things easier; but generally you are about to explore uncharted waters. There's no real reason to rush across the lake. This lens can deliver exceptional results for less money; IF you don't mind rowing a little. Also, make sure you are compatible with your particular camera.
