The original starter only lasted about 2 years before having problems. Installation was pretty easy and straightforward. I also had to remove the case, disconnect the cables, remove them and reinstall with a new one. The spacer was not needed. If I had anything to complain about with this starter, I would complain to JD about the silly design of placing one of the mounting bolts slightly behind the starter housing. It will seem how long it lasts. Note that if you have not already removed the case, be sure to remove the (2) screws at the bottom of the vent compartment.
