Review on Garmin ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Nuvi 50LM GPS Navigator by Bohyun Hansen

Revainrating 5 out of 5

My first GPS unit and I'm impressed

I've been procrastinating on getting a GPS for a long time and after careful consideration and reading many reviews I decided to go with this one. I'm glad I did. I'm now a recognized 'gadget freak' and have been playing with electronic toys for many years and this is a great toy. It works really well and I found it amazingly accurate and fun to use. For those who need to find new or unfamiliar places while driving, GPS makes life much easier and this model seems very functional. As this is my first and only GPS I honestly can't compare it to other devices. What can I say, it works very well for me and is exactly as described. In my experience (driving in the Winston-Salem, Greensboro, NC area) I have found this to be very accurate, useful and fun. Immediately after receiving this from "Revain" (at a great price and with fast delivery), I installed the appropriate software from "Garmin" website for this "Nuvi 50LM" model, like indicated, with clearly written instructions. The software installed easily on my computer and when I connected the GPS to my computer with the cable that came with it, it updated the maps in about 5 minutes with no problems or confusion. This model comes with "Life Time" (LM) map updates and seems to work just fine with those updates. I then plugged it into my car via the cigarette lighter using the cable that came with it. The screen is very clear and easy to read even in bright sunlight. It found the satellites very quickly and with minimal use of the instructions provided it was intuitively easy to program and use. Remember this is my FIRST GPS but I found it easy to learn and program. Then I programmed the target I already know to see what it would do. It worked flawlessly and I was blown away by how easy it was to read and follow the clear screens and "verbal" (female) voice prompts. The compass bearing and "Speed Limit" readings were surprisingly accurate and a great feature in my opinion. I then provided specific destinations for local shops and businesses in the Greensboro, NC area and this GPS has continued to work extremely well for me. I've only had this GPS for about 6 weeks and have only used it locally. Even in this short time I found it easy to use, large screen size and clarity for visual use and "verbal" voice prompts are great. I still find that the standard female voice suits me. As noted in some reviews, "verbal" directions can sometimes "distort" the pronunciation of some street names, but I do NOT mind. Damn, what are the names of some streets, even I would "distort" the pronunciation. If you don't understand the "verbal" street name, a quick glance at the "purple route line" on the screen is helpful and I think it's easy to understand. I haven't really been able to test this on a long drive yet, but with the performance I've seen on the ground so far, I'm guessing it will perform well almost anywhere within its capabilities in the continental United States. So far I am very satisfied and impressed with this device for my purposes and the expected use. Although I'm 'new' to using GPS and haven't had it in a very long time, this 'Garmin Nuvi 50LM' is clear to 'read', easy to follow and easy to understand voice instructions. It also has all the features I need. I would recommend it. UPDATE: As I only wrote the above review about using this GPS locally, I had the opportunity to test it on a longer trip. I traveled from Winston Salem, North Carolina to Richmond, Virginia. It's about a 4 hour drive on local roads, plus Interstate 40 (from North Carolina) to Interstate 40, Interstate 85 and then Interstate 95. I was driving in bright sunlight and with normal (not too busy) movement. This GPS continued to delight me. Even paying attention to freeways on the interstates, the views on this GPS screen were crisp and clear. I particularly liked its ability to "verbally describe" and display (on screen) the lanes you need to stay in to choose the correct exits. I am a 62 year old male who wears glasses and is becoming a little "deaf". It was still easy for me to see and "read" the screen, and I understood "verbal" instructions easily. Not only was this GPS very good at describing and explaining route on motorways, it was also very good at handling local roads at both ends of the journey. Now I still admit that I've only used this GPS but I'm still satisfied and impressed with it. This device. So far it has fully lived up to my expectations and does exactly what I expected with more ease of use and clarity than I expected. Some reviews still say it may have an "early failure" or stop working after a short period of time. I've only been using it for 7 weeks but I hope it will work well for me for a long time. I still highly recommend this GPS model Garmin Nuvi 50Lm. Garmin" GPS for about a year and a half and I am still very satisfied. I have now used this GPS unit for countless local trips around central North Carolina including cities (in North Carolina) of Statesville, Winston-Salem, Greensboro and Burlington. I have also used it for several long distance trips from North Carolina to upstate New York, Massachusetts, Maine and Connecticut. It still works flawlessly and is accurate. I particularly like the "speedometer" display on this unit The GPS shows your current movement speed If you act like a "good boy" your speed will show in green If you decide to walk on your "leading foot" your speed will show in red I'm absolutely amazed at how This device accurately determines not only the speed at which you are currently driving, but also changes in speed on motorways, because you can enter a zone with Entering at a Slower Speed If you're growing near a city and the speed limit on the interstate changes from perhaps 65 mph to 55 mph, the GPS will show the speed change almost as soon as you enter the slower zone. Not only do I think this is great (hey, I'm an old man and impressionable), I really like this feature. I have applied two software updates for this unit from the Garmin website through my computer. After connecting the GPS to my computer, I just followed the simple instructions from the Garmin website and Lifetime Map Update did it with no problems. In general I am very happy with this gadget. Garmin and its competitors have several different and newer models of GPS devices as advanced technology advances. Although this particular device of mine (the nรผvi 50LM model) is now "obsolete", it is still well supported by Garmin and is still one of my favorite toys. I HIGHLY recommend this device.
