In a rush to complete the starter repair I placed the spring under the gear return cup (black plastic cage) rather than as suggested above. Once the spring clip is installed, it is difficult to remove. The best way to resolve this issue is to gently tap on the roll pin to remove the recoil spring assembly and then use a small flathead screwdriver to push the edges of the spring retainer back towards the center from the inside edge of the spring guide. Then carefully pry out the spring holder with a punch. Then I professionally assemble the drive kit on the starter and test the starter before installation. Attempting to pull or break the spring retainer may damage the clip or spring guide. I tried this method for 10 minutes with no success and realized I had to try another method before damaging the drive kit.
