In a rush to complete the starter repair I placed the spring under the gear return cup (black plastic cage) rather than as suggested above. Once the spring clip is installed, it is difficult to remove. The best way to resolve this issue is to gently tap on the roll pin to remove the recoil spring assembly and then use a small flathead screwdriver to push the edges of the spring retainer back towards the center from the inside edge of the spring guide.
