Our mailbox is 700 feet from our house, there are trees between us too. This alarm went so far every time. BUT NOT IN OUR METAL MAILBOX. The husband spent about 3 hours, went there 4 times, trying to accommodate in different ways. It would work like a charm once taken out of the mailbox. If it were waterproof we could build something to make it work. It seems others here are making it work in their metal boxes, maybe their houses aren't as far away as ours, with trees in between. but again outside of this box. He worked outdoors so far from our house. Love the red light feature so you can reset it - voicemail notifications are a great invention for people who live far from voicemail. unfortunately we had to send it back. We chose the Hosmart 1/2 Mile rechargeable ramp signal. It's cumbersome and obviously no longer has a red indicator to reset. but that works/hums if you put it in our metal box closer to the door (with velcro) every time the lid is opened. This is our experience. I wanted it to work so bad! I really think it's a great system if it works for you - plastic mailboxes shouldn't be a problem. metal maybe.
