Smells bad in the terrarium Litter, sand and substrate

They are the right size, very difficult to cut even with my pliers and smell like a sack of dirt with a hint of manure. (Very strong smell) Hopefully cooking and drying will help get rid of the smell. Otherwise, I don't think I'll use them for my Krabitat.
